A guide to the areas of New Zealand - a la carte
North Island
The best time to travel in New Zealand is from November to April and most of the walking trips mentioned below depart weekly if not daily (some throughout the year), joining a group locally.Prices are on request and can include international and internal flights, extra accommodation and car hire or transfers.
- Auckland
- The main gateway to the country. Sail an America's Cup yacht, take a ferry to one of the many islands or simply relax at a waterside bar in Viaduct Harbour.
- Bay of Islands
- A Mediterranean-style seaside region of sandy beaches, dive sites and tiny islands, a few hours north of Auckland. Water-based activities rule the waves!
- Coromandel Peninsula
- A non-commercial area of lush greenery and beaches, two hours south-east of Auckland. Immerse yourself in the Kiwi way of life.
- Rotorua and Tongariro
- Centre of Maori culture Rotorua, in the centre of the island, is also a land of bubbling geysers, thermal activity and sulphur pools - probably the busiest spot in the country. Head to the popular Tongariro National Park for its famous One Day Crossing and summit active Mount Ruapehu (Mordor).
- Wellington
- Down at the southern tip, the nation's capital is home to the deservedly popular Te Papa national museum and a lively social scene.
